Dutch gov't sues contractor over issues with train line between Rotterdam & Schiphol

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is seeking compensation from the consortium that built the viaducts on the high-speed line between Schiphol and Rotterdam.

Design errors in the viaducts are reportedly forcing trains on the HSL-Zuid to operate at reduced speeds, the ministry confirmed in recent legal actions reported by outgoing State Secretary Thierry Aartsen to the Tweede Kamer.

The ten viaducts along the route require repairs, which are estimated to cost around half a billion euros. ProRail CEO John Voppen warned earlier this year that the restoration work could take several years to complete.

Aartsen said he plans to meet soon with the construction companies in the consortium to discuss the repairs. “I trust that the construction consortium recognizes the seriousness of the situation and is willing to cooperate,” he said.
