Dutch business investments grow in June despite unfavorable conditions
Investments in the Netherlands grew by more than 8 percent in June after a significant decline in the previous month. According to Statistics Netherlands, which tracks the conditions surrounding investments every month, a large portion of the money was spent on ships, planes, and machines, primarily in the defense and infrastructure sectors.
Despite this growth, the overall conditions for investments remained unfavorable in June, reflecting challenges in sales markets and financial markets. According to Statistics Netherlands, these conditions persisted into July. “Consumers were less negative, but producers’ assessment of their order positions worsened,” the statistics agency said, highlighting that confidence among companies remains fragile.
Business investments in May, meanwhile, fell by 1.4 percent according to revised figures. Investment in buildings declined the most, and spending on other road transport, such as vans, trailers, and trucks, also decreased compared with a year earlier.
While investments in certain areas picked up in June, other indicators of the Dutch economy suggest a mixed picture. The calendar-adjusted production of Dutch industry was 0.2% lower in June than in June 2024, with production falling in more than half of the underlying sectors.
Households, on the other hand, purchased 0.7% more goods and services in June than in June 2024. They spent more on durable goods such as shoes, clothing, and electrical appliances, while consumption of services declined slightly.
