Demand for air conditioners rising sharply in Germany as well as the Netherlands
Germany is producing and importing more air conditioners as a result of the increasingly hot summers. This comes a month after business association Techniek Nederland reported that they are expecting a record 300,000 air conditioning units to be installed in the Netherlands this year.
The German Federal Statistics Office reported on Tuesday that domestic production of air conditioners almost doubled last year, with imports also rising sharply over the past five years. The value of imported air conditioners in Germany has increased by 48 percent since 2019, reaching nearly 950 million euros last year.
There are currently over 2.2 million air conditioners in the Netherlands, according to Techniek Nederland. More people working from home and rising gas prices have also contributed to the rise in air conditioning.
The rising demand for air conditioning can be seen in the world energy figures. Last March, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that global energy demand grew by 2.2 percent last year. This is significantly higher than the average growth of 1.3 percent over the past ten years.
Techniek Nederland also shared other tips for people wishing to make their homes as heat-proof as possible without purchasing air conditioning. This group is recommended to use sunshades, insulation, and ventilation to help with cooling.
