Netherlands wants investigation into Russia torturing Ukrainian soldiers
The Netherlands and 40 other countries have called for an independent investigation into Russia torturing and abusing Ukrainian prisoners of war, caretaker Minister Caspar Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs announced on X.
According to Veldkamp, by demanding this investigation, the Netherlands is contributing to “truth-finding and accountability for Russian war crimes in Ukraine.”
The countries want to invoke the Moscow Mechanism, used in cases of serious human rights violations. Ten countries need to request the use of this mechanism, which involves deploying an expert mission to investigate the human rights situation in a country.
The Moscow Mechanism was previously invoked in Russia and Belarus in 2023 and 2024, also in connection with the war in Ukraine, according to RTL Nieuws.
The demand for this investigation comes from 41 of the 57 countries in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
