Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman breaks record with five tournament final in a row

Dutch football manager Sarina Wiegman reached her fifth tournament final in a row on Tuesday, beating Italy with her England women’s team to reach the final of this summer’s European Championships in Switzerland. This is a record as no other manager has ever reached five tournament finals in a row.

“Yeah, it is bizarre,” Wiegman said to NOS. “I also think it is unbelievable. I like it.” England find out their opponents for the final tonight when Germany and Spain face each other in the other semi-final.

Wiegman has won two trophies in her career. She won the European championship with her Dutch women’s team in 2017 before finishing runner-up in the World Cup two years later.

She then became England manager, winning the Euros in 2022 and finishing second at the World Cup in 2023. She has won The Best FIFA Women’s Coach on four occasions.

The only other manager to reach five finals was Even Pellerud with Norway women’s team, but he did not do this within five tournaments.

Wiegman’s side has produced many dramatic moments on their way to the finals. England equalized in the sixth minute of injury time on Tuesday evening before scoring a penalty in extra time. They had advanced in the previous round after beating Sweden on penalties.

Wiegman is set to stay in charge of the England side after the tournament. The 55-year-old has a contract until 2027.
