Dutch consumer confidence recovered slightly in July; Still very negative

Dutch consumers were more negative about the market in July than in June, Statistics Netherlands has reported. The confidence indicator stood at minus 32 last month, up from minus 36 the previous month.

According to Statistics Netherlands, consumers were especially negative about the economic climate. Willingness to buy was slightly less negative. Consumers found the timing for making major purchases somewhat more favorable than in June.

Confidence remains well below the 20-year average of minus 10. It reached its highest level ever in January 2000 (plus 36) and its lowest ever in September and October 2022 (minus 59).

The persistent low confidence levels suggest that many consumers remain cautious, potentially affecting spending and economic growth. Factors such as inflation, interest rate changes, or global uncertainties could be influencing consumer sentiment.

Economists often view consumer confidence as a key indicator of future economic activity, making these figures important to watch in the coming months.
