CDA leader Henri Bontenbal tops poll as preferred Dutch Prime Minister candidate

Henri Bontenbal, leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), is the preferred choice for prime minister among Dutch voters, according to a recent RTL Nieuwspanel poll. Forty-four percent of respondents consider Bontenbal suitable for the position, placing him well ahead of his rivals.

Voters across multiple parties—including Volt, ChristenUnie, D66, GroenLinks-PvdA, VVD, and Nieuw Sociaal Contract (NSC)—reportedly see Bontenbal as a capable candidate. VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz ranks second with 27 percent, while GroenLinks-PvdA leader Frans Timmermans is third at 24 percent.

Bontenbal, 44, became CDA parliamentary leader in September 2023 and has been a member of the Tweede Kamer for only four years, marking him as a relatively new figure on the national stage.

RTL political reporter Fons Lambie noted, “Bontenbal has wind in his sails right now. He is a ‘new face’ for many voters, and the CDA benefits from the collapse of NSC. But there are less than four months until the election, and polls can shift dramatically. Floating voters will decide their votes in the final weeks.”

Lambie added that this election cycle will be Bontenbal’s first major test. “Until now, he has rebuilt the CDA’s energy with its smallest-ever parliamentary group of five seats. Now, he must show if he can grow the party into a medium or large force again. The party hopes Bontenbal’s reliability and moral character make him attractive. But his opponents will challenge him fiercely. We already see Geert Wilders targeting the CDA more in the asylum debate.”

The party’s direction under Bontenbal remains uncertain. “Will he lean more right-wing? Polls suggest there is voter space among those who formerly supported NSC, BBB, or VVD,” Lambie explained. “Leading the CDA requires balancing the political center. Historically, the party’s base was somewhat more left-leaning than its voters. This tension surfaced recently when the CDA parliamentary group voted against strict asylum laws, revealing potential internal conflict.”

Respondents to the RTL Nieuwspanel described Bontenbal as kind, likeable, intelligent, and knowledgeable. One panelist commented, “He seems suitable because he chooses his words carefully. He has expertise and comes across as sympathetic.” However, Bontenbal still reportedly needs to build greater recognition, especially regarding leadership and trustworthiness, where many voters remain uncertain about what to expect.

In comparison, VVD’s Yeşilgöz and GroenLinks-PvdA’s Timmermans received lower ratings on several fronts. Though both were also often described as intelligent and competent, they scored significantly lower in terms of reliability and the ability to unite political factions.
