EU agrees to Dutch request for investigation into Israeli human rights violations

The European Union has decided to investigate alleged human rights violations against Israel after Dutch Foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp's request for them to do so garnered sufficient support within the EU. The decision to investigate the country's actions was confirmed by Veldkamp, who said that that EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas has agreed to conduct the investigation. "This is a very powerful signal," Veldkamp said after the news was reported. srael have been accused of blocking humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza.

"With this, we are giving a clear signal that this is serious. We are very concerned about the human rights situation in Gaza," Veldkamp said. The minister added that this is a message from the EU to Israel that it "must now stop the military action and completely lift the humanitarian blockade."

Veldkamp attended a joint meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers in Brussels on Tuesday. A total of 17 EU member states supported the call for an investigation, nine were against the idea.

Under current EU rules, a minimum of 14 out of the bloc’s 27 member states must back a proposal for it to be officially adopted. Veldkamp’s proposal had already received formal support from France, Spain, and Ireland on Monday, three influential EU member states that have publicly aligned themselves with the Netherlands. This was then followed by countries like Sweden and Finland joining the call for an investigation on Tuesday

According to the AD, there is currently a push within the Netherlands to do more. The CDA is calling for a suspension on certain trade agreements with Israel and to implement sanctions on the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. Veldkamp said that the country had already delivered a significant message with this and that they would now await the results of the investigation.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas acknowledged that the issue would trigger “a very, very hard discussion about Gaza” at the ministerial meeting.

It is currently unknown when the investigation will take place.
