Dutch payment processor Adyen hit by three DDoS attacks
Payment service Adyen was hit by three cyberattacks on Monday evening, seriously disrupting debit card and online payments. It involved DDoS attacks, a spokesperson for the payment processor confirmed to NOS and ANP.
In a DDoS attack, cybercriminals flood a server with data until it overloads and crashes. Adyen reported the first attack around 7:00 p.m., followed by more attacks at 8:35 p.m. and 11:35 p.m.
The attacks led to “limited availability” of Adyen services, the spokesperson said to NOS. People had trouble paying in stores, restaurants, and online. The company reported at 3:40 a.m. that all its services were up and running again.
Adyen is a major player in global payment transactions, acting as a link between merchants and banks for online and in-store payments. Adyen processes payments for Meta, Uber, eBay, HelloFresh, and Spotify, among others. Last year, Adyen processed transactions with a total value of almost 1286 billion euros.
It is unclear how much inconvenience the DDoS attacks caused.
