Veteran nurse with 40 years of experience banned from healthcare for sexual misconduct
A nurse with more than 40 years of experience in the healthcare field has been permanently banned from practicing after repeatedly engaging in sexually inappropriate behavior. Though the nurse had already been removed from the BIG register for healthcare providers nearly 18 months ago, the Regional Disciplinary Court for Healthcare in Amsterdam ruled on Tuesday that the man must never again be allowed in the register, emphasizing the need for a permanent ban.
The misconduct included making inappropriate comments and engaging in behavior that violated professional boundaries. In one incident, the nurse referred to a client as a "sexy woman," occasionally laying on her bed, and showing her lingerie photos.
In one particular episode, he wore a pair of briefs that were described as "only covering the penis and held in place by a cord around the waist." He believed this would make the client, who had confided in him about her sexual trauma, "laugh." The nurse admitted to the behavior, stating he thought of it as harmless jokes but later recognized that it was inappropriate.
The nurse, who had been employed since 2017 at a healthcare provider where he worked night shifts alone on the department, was the subject of multiple complaints of sexual misconduct reported to the Dutch Health and Youth Inspectorate. These complaints led to his dismissal in August 2023. Around the same time, the Public Prosecution Service launched a criminal investigation into his actions, according to the disciplinary court.
The disciplinary court found that the nurse’s actions severely undermined the trust of vulnerable clients. Given his decades of experience in the healthcare sector, the court deemed it "seriously culpable" that he failed to recognize the gravity of his actions and the harm they caused.
