Netherlands reaffirms support for Ukraine amid international coalition talks

The Netherlands has reaffirmed its commitment to providing ongoing military and financial support to Ukraine as part of an international coalition of allied nations. Prime Minister Dick Schoof stated that there is "broad consensus" among coalition members on the necessity of maintaining pressure on Russia while exploring diplomatic solutions to the war.

Schoof participated in a video conference on the matter, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Following the meeting, Schoof emphasized that the Netherlands stands firm in its support for Ukraine and welcomes recent proposals from the United States and Ukraine for a temporary ceasefire. "The proposals for a temporary ceasefire are hopeful," he said on X, adding that it is essential to "keep up the pressure on Russia to bring them to the negotiating table."

The U.S. and Ukraine have suggested a 30-day ceasefire to pause the three-year-long conflict, an idea that Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged but has yet to accept. In response, Schoof stressed that sanctions against Russia must continue to be reinforced. "It is crucial to keep working on new European sanctions," he stated.

The Netherlands is also preparing for the next phase of security planning. Dutch military officials, including Commander of the Armed Forces General Onno Eichelsheim, have been involved in international discussions regarding potential long-term security measures for Ukraine. Last week, Eichelsheim attended a meeting in Paris concerning the possible formation of an international military force.

Looking ahead, the Netherlands will participate in another key meeting in London next Thursday, where military planners will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine. "It is important that we continue to take responsibility as Europe—for the security of Ukraine, Europe, and therefore the Netherlands," Schoof said.
