Babboe bike owners criticize recall process and resolution options

Babboe is facing significant backlash from owners of its cargo bikes following a recall and the company’s handling of the damages. The Stichting Veilige Bakfiets, an organization representing cargo bike owners, reported that many of its members are dissatisfied with the company’s response to the recall and the resolution offered.

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) imposed a sales ban on Babboe in February 2024 after it was revealed that hundreds of bike frames had broken. In the same month, Babboe initiated a recall of 22,000 cargo bikes.

In a recent survey, Stichting Veilige Bakfiets reached out to nearly 4,000 affected owners for feedback on their experiences with the recall. Of the respondents, 27 percent expressed dissatisfaction with the solution provided by the company. More than a third of the owners indicated that they had received no assistance, while 8 percent stated that their bikes still had defects after inspection or repair.

Owners have also raised concerns about Babboe's customer service, describing it as difficult to reach and noting dissatisfaction with the information provided during the recall process.

Depending on the bike model and its age, affected customers are eligible for a new bike, an inspection and repair, a voucher, or a refund. Stichting Veilige Bakfiets is advocating for an option for all owners to choose a cash refund, with the amount large enough to fully cover the damages they’ve incurred.
