PostNL to deliver commercial mail within two days as opposed to one starting next year
PostNL will deliver commercial mail within two days from next year. Currently, people from the Netherlands receive letters from banks, insurance companies, and other organizations within 24 hours.
According to the mail company, this is one necessary step to keep mail delivery affordable in the Netherlands. PostNL said that they announced the measure earlier this year, but it is now definite. The company's advisory council recently gave positive advice about the decision.
PostNL has seen margins on mail delivery decline sharply in recent times because there is less mail to deliver, and labor costs are increasing. This is why the company says it is necessary to also deliver regular letterbox mail within two days in the long term and within three days in the future.
The last mentioned will not happen anytime soon as the postal law would have to be altered for this to occur. So, for now, PostNL will continue delivering regular mail "within one day, five days a week. "
PostNL asked the government for a financial contribution earlier this year to help with declining mail volumes. "PostNL has been able to do it themselves for a long time. Now we are indicating that we, in addition to a change in our service, are also looking at financial contributions to guarantee continuous stability," said CEO Herna Verhagen at the presentation of the company's numbers for the first six months last month.
If organizations want to see their commercial mail delivered faster than two days, then that will remain a possibility. But then they will have to pay a higher fee at PostNL.
