Cleaner dies after working on NS train; Another hospitalized
An employee of a cleaning company died on Wednesday after passing out shortly after cleaning an NS train on Tuesday. Another cleaner also passed out and is still in hospital, NS and the police confirmed to multiple media after reports in the Telegraaf.
The two cleaners, working for Vebego, were working at a stabling area at Utrecht Central Station on Tuesday morning. Both became unwell and lost consciousness. Colleagues alerted the emergency services. The two were taken to the hospital.
On Thursday, NS learned that one of the cleaners had died. In a post on the NS intranet, the railway company called it “a major shock.” NS doesn’t know what happened, a spokesperson told the Telegraaf. We know the workshop was safe. But it's now up to the police to conduct further investigation.”
An NS spokesperson stressed to NOS that the two workers did not fall ill while cleaning the train but shortly afterward.
The police confirmed the death to the Telegraaf and that they are investigating what happened.
A spokesperson for the cleaning company Vebego said that the company is also in the dark about what happened. The spokesperson expressed sympathy for the cleaners, their loved ones, and their colleagues.
