Dutch football assoc. planning Amsterdam event next Tuesday if Oranje wins Euro 2024

If the Dutch men's national football team wins the European Championships, manager Ronald Koeman and his players will celebrate in the City of Amsterdam on Tuesday. Dutch football association KNVB and the city authorities have been discussing how they can organize a large festival event in the capital city with an Oranje football crown.

"It is all very premature," said Marianne van Leeuwen, director of professional football at the KNVB. "But it is also not possible that you can quickly arrange a ceremony like this. Let's take everything step by step and first try to beat England on Wednesday." She attended Oranje's final scheduled training session in Wolfsburg on Tuesday before the semi-final match.

The winner of the match between the Netherlands and England will face either Spain or France. Those two teams play in a semi-final in Munich at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Both finalists will compete at the Olympiastadion in Berlin in the tournament's last match. The match starts at 9 p.m. on Sunday to determine the continental champion.

The Netherlands has played in that stadium twice during this tournament, first in a group stage match against Austria. They defeated Turkey in the quarter-finals in Berlin over the weekend.

Oranje was crowned the European champion on one occasion after beating the Soviet Union in the final in 1988 in Munich. After arriving at Eindhoven Airport, national coach Rinus Michels and his players traveled in a long procession to Amsterdam. The European champions received a well-attended boat parade through the Amsterdam canals, followed by a celebration at Museumplein.

The Dutch team was also honored in 2010 in Amsterdam after they lost to Spain in the final of the World Cup in South Africa. Manager Bert van Marwijk and the players did not initially want a party for their second place finish, but did enjoy it in the end. It was attended by around 700,000 people.

The KNVB announced that the Dutch national team will only be honored this year if the players win the European Championship in Germany. There will not be a party for second place.
