Curaçao police arrest third suspected murderer of military police officer

The Curaçao police arrested a third suspect in the murder of Royal Military Police adjutant Toon Brood. It concerns a 26-year-old man from Curaçao. He was arrested in the night from Friday to Saturday. The other two suspects reported to the police separately.

The 26-year-old third suspect was arrested outside a restaurant during the night, police said. After the arrest, the police initiated a search and confiscated several items.

Brood was shot dead in his home on Friday, May 31. Three masked men had invaded his home late that evening. Brood and his wife were sitting on the terrace. He got up to investigate a noise and was shot. His wife gave the men the car keys, and they left with the car and multiple items from the couple’s home.

On Friday, June 7, a man turned himself in to the police. He was arrested for involvement in Brood’s death. On Saturday, the police arrested another man for stealing the Dutch officer’s motorcycle. A third suspect was arrested on Sunday morning. However, he is a suspect in another murder case.

According to Curacao.nu, he has worked for the military police in Curaçao for 23 years. Chief officer Heiko de Jong told the newspaper that the terrible incident showed that the island has “a major problem with illegal firearms, and we are already working hard on that. Perhaps this incident will mean that we can tackle it even more seriously and that the penalties for illegal possession of weapons can also be increased.”
