Over 10 million people filed their tax returns in March and April for 2023
A record number of people filed their income tax returns for 2023 during the months of March and April. The tax authority received 10.3 million tax returns in total.
Private citizens and business owners had until Tuesday to file their taxes. Over 3.1 million people requested a postponement this year. Over 9.8 million income tax returns were filed on time in 2023, about 370,000 more than the year before.
The Belastingdienst, the Dutch tax authority, said it received 1.1 million tax returns within two days of the window opening to file a return for income earned last year. This number also set a new record, according to the government office.
Last year, more than 347,000 tax returns were filed on April 30. The total number of returns filed on that date this year has not been released.
More people and organizations were obligated to file their tax returns this year compared to last year. Around 7.3 million private citizens and residents, and 1.9 million business owners must file tax returns this year.
The amount of tax returns received can be higher because many people file their taxes even though they are not obligated to do so.
Residents of the Netherlands faced some issues getting their income tax returns filed last year due to outages involving the DigiD government personal verification system. No major technical problems were reported this tax season.
