PSV win again to top the Eredivisie table; Feyenoord score six
PSV continued their perfect start to the Eredivisie season on Saturday, beating NEC Nijmegen 4-0 in the Philips stadium in Eindhoven. PSV are top of the table after four games played. Luuk de Jong, Noa Lang, and Ricardo Pepi scored the goals for Peter Bosz’s side.
The KNVB cup holders were dominant from the first whistle, and the goal that had been coming fell in the 37th minute. A corner from Joey Veerman was headed into the net by Luuk de Jong. Just a minute later, they had doubled their lead. Noa Lang was one-on-one with Jasper Cillissen in the NEC goal, and the winger dispatched the chance coolly with a chip into the net after another assist from Veerman.
De Jong got his second goal in the second half from the penalty spot after substitute Bart van Rooij had taken down Lang. It was not the last penalty that PSV would get in the match, with United States international Ricardo Pepi finishing the scoring by scoring PSV’s second penalty of the game. The Eindhovenaren are top of the Eredivisie table ahead of FC Twente on goal difference. They face Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Feyenoord seem to have their groove back. After a disappointing start to the season, the Rotterdammers scored their 17th goal in three matches, beating Heerenveen 6-1 in de Kuip on Saturday.
Luka Ivanusec broke the deadlock after ten minutes, cutting inside before rolling the ball into the far corner to get his first goal for Feyenoord. Andries Noppert knew it would be a busy day for him in the Heerenveen goal as Feyenoord got their second six minutes later. Santiago Gimenez backheeled the ball into the path of Mats Wieffer, who had come forward from midfield and placed the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0.
The reigning champions made it 3-0 within 20 minutes when Igor Paixao curled a ball into the corner from the edge of the area. But Heerenveen showed some fight, getting a goal back in the 25th minute. Simon Olsson did very well to beat his man and dribble into the Feyenoord box before using his toe to knock the ball past Timon Wellenreuther into the net.
Gimenez headed the ball onto the bar in the opening phase of the second half before getting his goal in the 59th minute. Ivanusec found the onrushing fullback Quilinschy Hartman, who played the ball across to the Mexican striker for a simple tap-in.
Paixao added an assist to his tally for the day for the fifth goal when his cross was flicked into the far corner by Yankubah Minteh. The loanee from Newcastle got his second goal for the club, having scored in the last win against FC Utrecht.
Ondrej Lingr scored the final goal of the match. The Czech midfielder got his first goal for the match minutes after he had come on. Feyenoord can now focus on a big week for the club. Arne Slot’s side play their first match in the Champions League since 2017 on Wednesday against Celtic before facing arch-rivals Ajax on Sunday in the Eredivisie.
