Some 200 Dutch tourists on La Palma not in danger from volcano
A volcano erupted on the Spanish Canary island of La Palma on Sunday afternoon, many people had to be evacuated. There are about 200 Netherlands residents on the island who traveled there through travel agency TUI, but they are not in danger, a spokeswoman for the travel organization said on Sunday night.
It was previously reported that a plane with Dutch people from Amsterdam was unable to land due to the smoke, but "the pilot did an extra check on the air and airport conditions and then landed safely," the spokeswoman said.
On behalf of TUI, she said that the situation on the site is being closely monitored. "We take action where necessary to ensure the safety of our guests."
The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano spread smoke, ash and lava from the south of the island.
