Father stabbed on Amsterdam's Dam Square, in front of wife & children

A scooter rider stabbed a 53-year-old father on Dam Square in Amsterdam in front of the victim's wife and young children on Sunday evening, a witness said to the Telegraaf. The stabbing happened at around 6:00 p.m. after the scooter rider got into an argument with several cyclists, the witness said.

According to the witness, the father was on his own bicycle and the mother was on a cargo bike with their young children. They were waiting at the traffic lights near Dam Square when the scooter rider started shouting at another cyclist.

"Suddenly a scooter driver came riding at us. He got into a fight wit a man who he though was a little too much to the left. That cyclist was a nice gentleman who really did not want to fight, but he still got the full blast. He kept on swearing with the most awful of accusations", the witness said to the newspaper.

The scooter rider parked his scooter and turned his anger on a woman - the mother of the family. "He shouted 'cancer whore' at her while she was standing there on a cargo bike with toddlers inside", the witness said. Her husband defended her, telling the screaming scooter rider to calm down, according to the witness. "The scooter driver then jumped on the man and stabbed him in the back, just below his neck."

The man with the knife left the scene on a dark colored scooter, riding towards Spuistraat, the Amsterdam police said on Twitter. The victim was "bleeding heavily" but was conscious and able to communicate with first responders, the police said. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

According to the witness, bystanders took pictures of the scooter rider and his license plate, which they shared with te police. The police have not yet announced any arrests.
