Dutch man fined €550 for taking coins from Rome fountain

A 36-year-old Dutch man was fined 550 euros for taking coins from a fountain on Piazza Navona in Rome. The police caught him red handed as he was getting out of the Fontana del Moro during the early hours of Sunday morning, NOS reports.

The city of Rome is taking a tough stance against tourists acting in an uncivilized manner, according to the broadcaster. It is now forbidden to wash in the fountains and to drink alcohol on the street after 11:00 p.m., for example. People writing or etching their names into monuments - something that happens dozens of times per year - is also no longer tolerated.

"Rome remains a hospitable city, but that does not mean that we have to tolerate all kinds of behavior", Rome mayor Virginia Raggi said.
