WWII munition found in Amsterdam Oost garden
Construction workers in Amsterdam Oost found a decades-old weapon in the backyard of a home in the Watergraafsmeer district. Explosives experts at the scene on Finsenstraat determined it had been already-fired and was thus harmless.
In a post on Instagram, police said they assume the weapon is from World War II. Broadcaster AT5 remarked that a map of bombings and shelling in Amsterdam showed that an air attack struck Middenweg one street over in February 1945.
The city says thousands of bombs fell on Amsterdam or near the capital. Due to the nature and brevity of reports filed at the time, it is unclear exactly how many blasts hit the city and where all the bombs fell.
