Green, labor women final candidates for Amsterdam mayor: report

GroenLinks politician Femke Halsema and PvdA politician Carolien Gehrels are two of the three final candidates to be the new mayor of Amsterdam, sources told the Telegraaf. The third candidate will be chosen by the confidential committee responsible for picking the candidates later this week, the newspaper writes.

According to the Telegraaf's sources, Halsema's candidacy is being met with opposition in the Amsterdam city council. They worry that she does not have enough administrative experience since she left the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, in 2011. Gehrels can count on broader support, because she knows the Amsterdam city hall well.

The naming of the mayoral candidates is supposed to happen in complete confidentiality. Earlier this month the Public Prosecutor launched an investigation into a leak in the confidential committee, after the Telegraaf reported on procedures followed by the committee.
