Elevator falls 6 floors in Maastricht; one killed

A man was killed in Maastricht on Monday afternoon when the elevator he was in plummeted six floors. This happened around 5:00 p.m. during work on the former Sphinx building, De Limburger reports.

Emergency services tried to resuscitate the man, but it was to no avail. He died at the scene.

The Inspectorate for Social Affairs and Employment, the former Labor Inspectorate, is investigating the cause of the accident.

The historic Sphinx building on Boschstraat is part of the former Sphinx factory complex and is located in the Statenkwartier district. It dates from early last century and was part of the Royal Sphinx plumbing factory until 2006, according to newspaper AD. The building was designated a national monument in 1996.
