Free Euro-trip tickets up for grabs for 18-year-old EU citizens
Dutch 18-year-olds can now apply for a free train ticket for a trip through Europe. This gift from the European Union is intended to "bring people together" and to show young EU residents that the European Union is "also about emotions, not just politics", according to initiator German MEP Manfred Weber, RTL Nieuws reports.
Here are the rules:
- You must be 18 years old on July 1st of this year
- You must have the nationality of one of the 28 EU Member States
- You can travel with up to four other 18-year-old EU citizens
- Your travels must begin in one of the EU Member States
- Your journey must start between July 9th and September 30th
- Your journey must last at least 1 day and a maximum of 30 days
- You have to visit at least 1 and at most 4 other EU countries
- You have to answer 5 questions about European cultural heritage.
You also have to act as a so-called DiscoverEU ambassador by sharing your travel experience on social media and making your photos available for a photo exhibition in the European Parliament.
A total of 15 thousand free travel passes are up for grabs. They mainly apply to trains, but also to some bus lines and ferries. If more than 15 thousand people apply, a selection will be made based on your five answers about European cultural heritage.
Dutch 18-year-olds can apply through this website. Applications close on June 26th.
