Community center roof collapse injures six
At least six people in Gorinchem were injured Friday afternoon after a portion of the Bogerd community center caved in, leaving a pile of debris inside the building. Emergency service personnel responded in droves to the incident, with a team from local breaking news website Zuid-Holland Zuid Actueel witnessing at least ten ambulances, a helicopter rescue unit, and a large police and fire department presence. Another air ambulance and a police helicopter was also dispatched to the region.
The severity of the injuries was not revealed as of 3 p.m. Police confirmed that there were no other victims lying beneath the rubble, and the building is sealed off for safety reasons.
It happened just after 1:20 p.m. when the ceiling collapsed in on a group made up mostly of women who were line dancing in the ballroom there. There were several men also in the building playing billiards adjacent to the ballroom, RTV Rijnmond reported.
"We heard cracking, and all of a sudden the whole roof came down. My legs are still shaking!" Cees Stolk told the broadcaster. "There was a great deal of panic. You could not see anything," he continued.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation. It is not a particularly old building, "These were all heavy beams that came down," he said, amazed that the community building ceiling could collapse so quickly.
