Trucker’s plea for better bike safety lights goes viral

Doetinchem trucker Peter Hagenaars' Facebook plea for bike safety lights after nearly hitting a girl on a bike in Borculo took the internet by storm. By 10:40 on Friday morning, 15 hours after he posted the plea, the post had 31,472 likes, 25,914 shares and 2,823 comments. Hagenaars describes a trip in Borculo, Gelderland with his truck when he suddenly had to hit the brakes to avoid hitting the girl. The girl's bicycle had no safety lights, making her nearly impossible to see. "Hi girl in Borculo. On your bike without any lights in your dark clothes... You cycled in the rain over the industrial terrain... Without lights. It's very busy there with trucks and things" he writes. "I also drive there with my truck... I really could not see you! yes... At the last moment, I had to brake with 50 tons. That was all good eh! Were you as shocked as I am? If i hit you it would also be my fault..." Luckily Hagenaars saw the girl in time and managed to avoid an accident. He asks her to put lights on her bike. "I also have three children... I am very careful with that. I think that your parents are also very careful with you! So ask them to put good lighting on your bike... So you can be seen.. Because sooner or later you will have less luck and then many people will be sad."
