Bronze statue of Van Gogh’s Potato Eaters unveiled
Despite protest from some local residents, a bronze statue of Vincent van Gogh's famous painting The Potato Eaters was unveiled in the Brabant city of Nuenen on Wednesday night.
The statue is the handiwork of Peter Nagelkerke, according to the Telegraaf. The statue now stands in the Nuenen Park.
Earlier this year a group of opponents filed a lawsuit to try and stop the statue being placed. They claimed that the work is ugly and feared that tourists coming to see it will cause nuisance. But the court ruled against them and the municipality ignored them.
Van Gogh created about a quarter of his artworks in Nuenen, including the Potato Eaters. The painting shows a peasant family eating potatoes in a stuffy room. The artwork is currently hanging in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam
