Pediatrician freed after child pornography arrest

A 39-year-old pediatrician under investigation for possession of child pornography, was released from custody Wednesday night, the public prosecutor said in a statement. The prosecutor stressed that a final decision was not made into whether charges will be filed in the case. "There are insufficient grounds to hold the suspect any longer," the prosecutor's office said. The pediatrician was working at the Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen at the time of Monday's arrest. The hospital suspended the doctor upon learning of the arrest because of the charges and his professional work with children. Parents of patients were notified of the arrest. He started working at the hospital's pediatrics department in November 2011. The imagery found and viewed by the public prosecutor (OM) did not indicate that the man had made the pornographic material himself, Nu.nl reported. Otherwise, he would still be in custody, the prosecution told the news outlet. The prosecution has not released the number of images that were found, nor the nature of them. Police will continue the investigation and turn the file over to prosecutors once it is concluded. An OM representative has stated that the man does not pose a flight-risk, and potential charges in the case could lead to between four and six years in prison.
