Sled crashes through thin ice killing boy, 6

A 6-year-old boy was killed along the Hoofdvaartsweg in Assen on Saturday afternoon when he fell through thin ice while sledding. The emergency services received a report that a child had fallen into the water along Hoofdvaartsweg on Saturday afternoon. They found a sled on the shore with tracks leading to a hole in the ice. Firefighters dove into the water and was able to retrieve the boy almost immediately. He was transported to a hospital in Groningen by ambulance, but it was to late to save him.
