Natural gas to slow in Groningen after earthquakes: report

The gas valve in Groningen will be slowed even further to prevent earthquakes. The cabinet discussed this last Friday, RTL Nieuws reports. The Cabinet already decided to extract less gas in Groningen early this year. Especially in Loppersum, which is often hit by earthquakes. Research showed that this will reduce the number of earthquakes. Gas extraction in Groningen is a difficult issue. Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs has to compromise between Groningen residents' desire to stop the gas extraction as soon as possible and the economic interests of the Netherlands. The gas delivers more than 12 billion euros per year. Kamp will possibly go to Groningen on Wednesday to explain his decision, despite the heavy criticism he received on his previous visit earlier this year.
