Cop gets month in prison for shooting at motorist
Yesterday police officer Deddy S. (37) was sentenced to one year in prison and 240 hours of community service for shooting motorist Ali Ouaalit in 2012. This is the first time in 18 years that an officer has to go to jail for shooting on the job.
Ouaalit was shot three times and suffered a spinal injury and was immediately paralyzed. He is happy and relieved with the verdict. "That the officer has been found guilty is more important than the punishment he gets", he said.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of August 24th, 2012 in the center of Rotterdam during an alcohol check. Ouaalit was pulled over and tried to drive away, because he was under the influence. According to Ouaalit, he wanted to park at the side of the road. S. opened fired because he thought Ouaalit was going to drive over his colleague. The colleague later stated that he was in no danger.
