Football fans held surrounding Ajax-ADO Den Haag match
Police arrested some 30 football fans Sunday for public disturbances in connection with the football match between Ajax and ADO Den Haag at ArenA.
The football supporters face charges for disturbing the public order; police say acts they committed were setting off fireworks, assault, brawling, insulting and pelting glass.
This all took place at Leidse and Rembrandt Squares, where hundreds of fans were following the match in bars. At Leidse Square the atmosphere was mostly peaceful, but it got a little rowdy just after the match ended. A couple of fights broke out, but mounted police officers were able to quell them quickly.
Two men were also arrested for involvement in a big brawl at the Ajax supporters’ home. The fight had broken out before the match started; some 20 fans were involved and one man sustained a broken leg
Police furthermore suspect that a fire in a basement at Leidse Square was caused by fireworks fans had set off. Firefighters were on the scene quickly and were and were able to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining buildings. Nobody was injured.
