Man sets self on fire, dies

The man, who set himself on fire, Friday evening near a bus stop, close to the entrance of a supermarket on the Aagje Dekenstraat, died Sunday. The victim was taken to the burn center in Rotterdam by trauma helicopter, critically injured.

The City of Vlissingen has scheduled a closed meeting Tuesday, starting at 19:00 for witnesses and neighbors to talk about what happened or to privately meet with victim support. Mayor Letty Demmers, Community Health Services (GGD) staff and victim support will be present to welcome attendants. GGD dedicated a hotline to parents and children who witnessed the incident, 06-20437876. Staff from Youth Healthcare will be present to answer questions of traumatic nature from children. The man was a familiar face in the neighborhood. Bystanders and staff of the Albert Heijn rushed over to put out the fire, after the man doused himself in a flammable liquid and set himself on fire. Several children witnessed the incident.
