New limo for King Willem-Alexander
King Willem-Alexander has a different taste in service cars than princess Beatrix. The old reliable Volvo s80 Limousine of the Koninklijk Huis has been traded in for a more modern vehicle: an extra-long Audi A8.
"The Audi A8 has received the preference with an eye on the functionality and the experience with the company RemetzCar from Lisse with the extension of Audi's" spokesperson for the Royal information services told Autovisie.
The Dutch company RemetzCar has been remodeling limousines on the basis of existing models since 1996. Only two models of the Audi A8 exist in the world. one is in the possession of lord Kooyenga from Dokkum, owner of Royal Class Directievervoer & Security, which rents out and sells luxury executive and business vehicles. The other one is now in the hands of the Royal House.
Kooyenga paid about €350,000 for his Audi, but the King's limo has a bigger price tag because it has more specifications, such as armoring. "Due to safety aspects we are not communicating about the price" spokesperson for the Royal information services said.
According to a spokesperson for RemetzCar, the car arrived at the end of November. "We then spend a few months modifying the car under specific wishes of the Royal House."
The extra safety features do make the car heavier. The complete limousine would weigh in at 3,725 kgs. With that weight, the road tax for the car would cost €2,604 per year in the province of Noord-Holland. Although King Willem-Alexander wouldn't have to pay this.
The normal Audi A8 L has a length of 5.27 meters. The XXL version made by Remetz is 45 centimeters longer, which brings the total to 5.715 meters. That extra length has positive results for the King and Queen's leg room.
There's no lack of luxury, either. Between the front and back seats a special electronic glass plate has been introduced, which can be made transparent or non-transparent at the push of a button, in case a little privacy is wanted. An electrically-operated writing table with a pull-out work surface, two fold-out 10.2-inch LCD-screens, and an integrated fridge are available as well. A 6.3 liter FSI W12 motor with a capacity of 500 pk and 265 Nm coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission makes for good traction.
The Royal house will hold the old Volvo S80 in reserve. "By occasion it will be determined with which cars the members of the Royal House will be moved", the spokesperson said.
