Silver and Bronze for Dutch women

Ireen Wüst and Margot Boer won silver and bronze on the 1,000 m skating, bowing to the Chinese Zhang Hong with a record time of 1:14:02. Wüst won gold on the 3,000 m and now silver with a time of 1:14:69, bringing her personal record to a total of 5 medals in her career.

Boer won bronze on the 500 m and earned herself another bronze medal in the 1,000 m with a time of 1:14:90. The Dutch team has so far won 12 medals in the Sochi Olympics, compared to 11 in 1998 in Nagano. Two other Dutch competitors in the 1,000 m, Lotte van Beek (1:15:10) and Marrit Leenstra (1:15:15) ranked 5th and 6th respectively. Zhang is the first Chinese female skater to ever win gold. Qiaobo Ye won silver twice in 1992 and bronze in 1994. Olga Fatkoelina, the Russian favorite, came in 4th.
