Michel Mulder writes history in Sochi
Michel Mulder won Olympic Gold on the 500 m skating in Sochi, the first gold medal in Dutch history on the short track. The Dutch claimed first, second, and third place in a neck-to-neck race with only a few hundredths of seconds difference.
Michel Mulder finished in 34.67 seconds, with Jan Smeekers right behind him on 34.72 seconds. Michel's brother, Ronald, finished third with 34.82 seconds. Smeekers started the second and final round with four hundredths of a second in the lead, but Michel skated a spectacular second round and came in first. Defending champion, Tae-Bum Mo from South Korea came in fourth, 0,38 seconds behind Michel. Stefan Groothuis, the fourth Dutch skater, finished last but one, due to a fall during his second round. The Dutch also dominated the 5 km race, taking first, second, and third place.
