The report, 'Expectations construction output and employment in 2014,' also shows that the 2014 is a transition year and the construction sector is expected to see growth in 2015 and beyond, Rtlnieuws reports.
The construction of new homes dropped by 35% and it will decline further 7% in 2014. There was also a decline in residential buildings and land, water and road construction last year.
However, the construction of commercial buildings and land, water and road is expected to show some improvement. In addition, 2014 will be the best year for the renovation and maintenance market.
Overall, the construction sector will shrink by 0.5% in 2014.
From 2008 to 2013, a total of 70,000 full-time jobs were disappeared in the construction sector, according to EIB. In 2013, 27,000 full-time jobs were lost and it was the worst year since the 2008 crisis.
After the expected jobs loss of 10,000 this year, there will be fewer than 300,000 full-time workers in the construction sector.
But, the EIB is optimistic about growth in 2015 and subsequent years. The construction sector is expected to see growth in 2015 to 2019 mainly due to the construction of new homes, according to the report.
The construction output could increase to more than €60 billion in 2019, according to the EIB.
