Mars, which is also called the Red Planet, is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System, according to Wikipedia. The Red Planet is roughly 225 million km away from earth. More than 200,000 candidates applied, and just over 1,000 have been shortlisted. The first group will include 40 people and will be sent to colonize Mars in 2023, Sun News Network said. Recently, Mars One signed contracts with Lockheed Martin for the mission's 2018 launch that will include a robotic lander and a communications satellite to start the settlement.
