The 24-year-old Van Gerwen defeated Scotland’s Peter Wright by 7-4 at Alexandra Palace, London, Sky Sports reports.
The victory takes Van Gerwen to world number one, overtaking 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, BBC News said.
Van Gerwen is taking home prize money of £250,000.
"It's so difficult to win this title and there was more pressure on me this year than last year. It means so much for me,” Van Gerwen said.
