Alarm Rijkswaterstaat on Oosterschelde storm surge barrier
Rijkswaterstaat sounds the alarm on the Oosterschelde storm search barrier in an internal report. The barrier suffers from years of neglect. This is announced by RTL Nieuws, after reading the report '' a closer look on management Oosterschelde barrier'. The service that must keep up the flood barriers in New Zealand reportedly neglected the sea walls for ten years.
The reliability of the barrier is under pressure, the department Zealand has less and less knowledge, and the situation gets out of control, says the report. The organization is too small to properly perform tasks and there are gaps in responsibility and planning.
A structural improvement of the organization is urgently needed, according to Rijkswaterstaat . Also the department that oversaw the condition of the soil was mostly shut down since 2000.

Wikimedia commons Last month engineers who were closely involved in the construction of the barrier, suggested that Rijkswaterstaat was seriously negligent in maintenance of the Oosterschelde barrier. In response to parliamentary questions, however, Minister of Infrastructure Melanie Schultz van Haegen said the barrier was and still is safe. So-called calving has led to damage to the soil of the Oosterschelde barrier. Even though this did not lead to problems for the barrier itself, it was reason to more strictly enforce barrier maintenance. The dike on the Noordbeveland shore no longer met the requirements, reported the Minister to the House in April. In order to continue to guarantee the stability of the dike measures were implemented early. Rijkswaterstaat had already announced prior to the letter that sand has washed away at the edges of the floor mats that protect the Oosterschelde barrier. For that reason they will dump stone in those spots later this year, reported Rijkswaterstaat. In response to RTL News Schultz van Haegen admits that there were substantial cutbacks at Rijkswaterstaat. The district of Zealand could have made more use of the knowledge in the rest of the organization. She also writes that the Oosterschelde barrier has always met the legal requirements.
