EuroHockey 2013: NL vs. Ireland
The Netherlands defeated Ireland 2-1 in an opening display at the European Championships.
Shane O'Donoghue's penalty corner led the Irish team; however, Mink van der Weerden and Robbert Kemperman managed to score winning goals for the Olympic silver medalists.
In the 20th minute, O'Donoghue secured a penalty corner, struck by Chris Cargo. But Dutch van der Weerden tied the match with a penalty corner four minutes ahead of half-time. Kemperman scored five minutes from time.
Ireland coach Andrew Meredith commended his team’s performance.
"This was a very positive first up performance against one of the world's top teams," said Meredith.
"For the majority of the game we were very disciplined in the application of our game plan with fatigue becoming a factor towards the last phase of the game, which unfortunately resulted in conceding the late second goal.”
