Car crashes into Hague canal, driver killed

A motorist was killed in The Hague on Tuesday night after his car crashed into a canal. Bystanders tried to rescue the man out of the car, but were unsuccessful. Fire brigade divers eventually got him out of the water.

"He was resuscitated, but it was to no avail", a spokesperson for the fire department said to newspaper AD.

The accident happened around 11:45 p.m. on Soestdijksekade, the police said on Twitter. Fire brigade divers are searching for any other passengers. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Witnesses told AD that the car sped through a red light on Troelstrakade. The driver lost control and hit a pole. The car ended up in the water 180 meters further.
