A 33-year-old man was sentenced to 22 years in prison for abusing a 14-month-old girl from Hengelo to such an extent that she died. The court in Alemlo convicted Maick S., the boyfriend of baby Xaja's mother, of murder. The sentence is 8 years longer than the Public Prosecutor demanded, partly because of the "particularly violent manner" in which he killed the girl, NU.nl reports.
A hand grenade was found on Eerste Coehoornstraat in the center of Amsterdam on Friday afternoon. The police closed that street as well as Czaar Peterstraat for investigation. The hand grenade was stuck to a post box, according to a photo AT5 has in its possession.
The police are at the scene to investigate.
A 24-year-old man was caught trading weapons from within the psychiatric prison in Heiloo. He was arrested last week. The man, Herman D. from Ermelo, had three cellphones and a laptop with him from which he ran his business, the Telegraaf reports.
The laptop and phones were found in the suspect's room in Heiloo, sources told the newspaper. In 2017, D. was sentenced to a short prison sentence and institutionalized psychiatric treatment, because he stabbed three men in Nieuw-Vennep, the man's lawyer confirmed to the newspaper.
A large fire broke out in nature reserve De Soester Duinen on Thursday afternoon. It took the fire department hours to get the wildfire under control. Up to four hectares of forest was burned, the local safety office said, NU.nl reports.
The fire department divided the area into two parts and fought the fire from both sides. Extra fire extinguishers were called in to help. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
People were asked to stay outside the nature reserve while the fire was being fought.

A man was killed in an explosion and fire in an apartment in Voorburg during the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Haaglanden fire department confirmed on Twitter.
The fire broke out just after midnight. Firefighters managed to get the resident out of the burning apartment. Emergency workers tried to resuscitate him, but it was to no avail. The man died at the scene.
Multiple other apartments in the complex on Frans Mortelmansstraat were evacuated. The residents were allowed to return home at around 2:00 a.m.
An explosion on a train in Nijmegen on Sunday, in which one man was killed, was caused by firework bombs that the victim took with him to take his own life, multiple independent sources told De Gelderlander.

An 18-year-old woman was dragged from her bicycle and raped by an as yet unidentified man on Kasteellaan in Heusden during the early hours of Monday morning. The police searched for the perpetrators for hours, but so far no arrests were made. The young woman's mother was the one who found her daughter after the attack, various sources told AD.
According to the police, the girl went out with friends in the center of Asten on Sunday night. She cycled home at around 1:00 a.m. At Kasteellaan, she was pulled from her bike, dragged into the bushes and raped, the police said.

The girl is 16 years old and around 1.7 meters tall with a slender posture. She speaks Spanish and English. She was wearing a dark green, long jacket with a pink fur collar when she disappeared.
The boy is 14 years old and around 1.65 meters tall. He only speaks Spanish. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a black jacket, black pants, and white shoes.
A person was hurt in the face in a shooting on Aan het Broek in Sittard on Sunday evening, the police said. One suspect was arrested. A firearm was found in the home of the suspect, NU.nl reports.

After having one of its Boeings seized at Schiphol Airport on Wednesday, cash-strapped Indian airline Jet Airways canceled almost all of its flights to and from Amsterdam on Friday. Loose cows caused multiple accidents on the A73 highway near Oirlo in Limburg early on Friday morning. At least one person was injured in a collision and one cow was put down after being hit by a car, the Limburg police said on Twitter.
The injured person was taken to hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The European Union leaders decided to grant the United Kingdom another delay for their departure from the EU. The British now have until the end of October to approve a withdrawal agreement. Prime Minister Mark Rutte was satisfied after the hours long EU summit on Wednesday. "It was important that the union continue to function and we achieved that with this decision", he said to NOS.
The Amsterdam police carried out charges before the Champions League quarter final match between Ajax and Juventus at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Wednesday evening. Over 30 football supporters were arrested. Earlier in the day the police arrested over a hundred armed Italian supporters. The total number of arrests came to more than 140, NU.nl reports.
