A study done by EenVandaag on 27 thousand members of an Opinion Panel found that 83 percent believe that Zwarte Piet's appearance should not be adjusted.

Supermarket chain Albert Heijn has mostly dropped the black-faced version of Zwarte Piet from it’s stores and product packaging, the company’s parent said Wednesday. Though the character might pop up on the boxes of candies and cookies, the store’s parent company, Ahold, says it will not be used inside or outside stores.

Toy company Fisher Price sold its last Zwarte Piet dolls in The Netherlands yesterday after various media reported that the company would stop production of the doll, which is part of a set including Piet, Sinterklaas and his horse Schimmel. Online as well as in stores, there was a rush to buy the dolls, which sold by the hundreds.

In the first eight months of this year, the Discrimination Hotline in Amsterdam has recorded 1562 total reports of people who say they feel discriminated against. With this figure, which has tripled in Amsterdam since last year from 525 to 1562, the Dutch capital is leading the list of cities where people feel discriminated, Het Parool reports.

On Twitter, is a trending topic as many customers are angered that HEMA is "surrendering" under the Zwarte Piet discussion.

The Netherlands State Council will come with a ruling on Zwarte Piet sooner than the usual nine months it would take the highest administrative court to make such a ruling. The court in Amsterdam has ruled that Zwarte Piet is harmful towards black people. Mayor Eberhard van der Laan should have taken this into consideration when issuing the permit for the Sinterklaas entrance parade into the city last year.

In an attempt to quell accusations of racist imagery, the Netherlands Center for Folk Culture and Immaterial Heritage (VIE) have come with a new suggested look for Zwarte Piet. The reimagined character is still black, but no longer has curly hair, or full red lips. The character's outfit has been updated, and Piet will also no longer wear his signature golden hoop earrings.
