Researchers from the Leiden University and Erasmus medical centers were awarded a grant to further develop their 3D-printing technique to correct gaps in the backs of fetuses afflicted with by spina bifida. Professor Dick Oepkes of the LUMC and Alex Eggink of Erasmus created propose a minimally invasive procedure during early stages of pregnancy to print a watertight seal directly upon the unborn child, closing off the spine and nerves.

Most schools in the Netherlands will be keeping Zwarte Piet in his traditional appearance during the Sinterklaas celebrations this year and in the years to come. Police in Rotterdam arrested five men after a search of a residence on Tuesday turned up a Kalashnikov rifle and a heavy-caliber handgun. Investigators were acting on a tip when they raided the home, and were surprised to find a significant number of bank card skimming devices, along with gloves and tie-rips, the police said in a statement.
