The Netherland's word of the year is 'appongeluk' - a traffic accident in which at least one of the involved parties were busy on their smartphones, Van Dale announced on Tuesday. Nearly 70 thousand votes were cast for the word of the year. Appongeluk won with 20 percent of the votes.
Van Dale announced the top ten contenders for Word of the Year 2016, new words that emerged during the course of the year. This year's new words indicate that United States president-elect, the Brexit and Pokemon were on Dutch people's minds.
"Rampvlucht" is the word of the year for 2014. This was determined by members and followers of the Genootschap Onze Taal (Society Our Language) and listeners of De Taalstaat (The Language State). The winning word was announced in the program for the Dutch language on NPO Radio one on Saturday.
Dagobertducktaks has won the Van Dale Word of the Year 2014. Ton den Boon, Dutch chief editor of the Dikke Van Dale, and Ruud Hendrickx, Flemish chief editor of the Dikke Van Dale, announced the winner in a short film.
The voting on Van Dale Word of the Year 2014 ends today at 12:00 p.m. The results will be announced tomorrow.
