This week will start out cold and gray in the Netherlands, but warmer weather is ahead. From Wednesday the weather will turn autumn-like. "It can be around 11 to 12 degrees on Thursday and Friday", Buienradar weatherman Arjan Willemse said to RTL Nieuws.

The first snow of the season fell in Drenthe, Overijssel and Groningen on Tuesday evening. According to Weerplaza, it mostly involved wet snow, and not enough to blanket the landscape. 

The winter showers moved across the country during the course of the evening, but stopped by midnight in most places. 

Wednesday will see mainly dry weather, with sunshine every now and then, according to the weather services. Afternoon temperatures will climb to between 3 and 7 degrees.

The Netherlands can prepare for a relatively long period of remarkably cold weather, according to Weerplaza weatherman Raymond Klaassen. In the course of next week the temperature will drop to an average that is lower than usual for this time of year, and that chilly period is expected to last until early December, he said to NU.nl.

This week is starting out rainy for the Netherlands and that could mean a busy rush hour on Monday morning, Weerplaza expects. The weather service expects between 200 and 400 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads. Train traffic may also suffer under the weather, though indirectly through leafs falling on the track.

The unseasonably warm weather will remain in the Netherlands for a few days yet, according to Weerplaza. This is because the remnants of tropical hurricanes Leslie an Michael are leaving over the Mediterranean, instead of crossing our country as expected.

On Monday maximum temperatures will rise to between 22 and 25 degrees. It will be mostly sunny and dry. Tuesday will also still be sunny and warm, with maximums between 21 and 25 degrees expected.

This week will be sunny and warm in the Netherlands, with temperatures expected to climb up to 25 degrees during the course of the week. Such high temperatures this late in the year are "quite exceptional", according to Weerplaza. A number of weather records stand to be broken.

The warm temperatures are brought by hot air from the Mediterranean region, according to Weeronline. On Wednesday and Thursday temperatures will rise to 20 degrees on the Wadden islands  and along the coast, 24 degrees inland, and even 26 degrees in Zuid-Limburg.

Wednesday and Thursday will be sunny and warm in the Netherlands, but those will be the last summer days for the country this year, Weerplaza expects. Cool autumn weather is on the way.

Wednesday will by sunny and largely dry. Maximum temperatures will range from 21 degrees Celsius on the Wadden to around 27 degrees inland. The coastal provinces will see some cloud cover, but the rest of the country will be mostly sunny. Thursday will also be largely sunny with maximums around 24 degrees.

Maximum temperatures in De Bilt will not reach 20 degrees on Friday, bringing an end to a record long streak of nationally warm days in the Netherlands, according to Weerplaza.

A national warm day is when maximums reach at least 20 degrees at the national weather station in De Bilt. That has been the case everyday from June 25th till August 23rd - 60 consecutive warm days. The previous record was 53 warm days in 2003.

Maximum temperatures in De Bilt climbed to 20 degrees on Saturday, making it the 100th national warm day in the Netherlands this summer, according to Weerplaza. Weeronline currently expects that the average maximum temperature in De Bilt this summer will come out at 19.1 degrees, which means that this summer is also the hottest summer since historical temperature measurements started in 1706.

Tuesday will still be very hot in the Netherlands, but after Wednesday temperatures will drop to what is normal for August, according to Weerplaza. The weather service expects maximums of between 20 and 25 degrees later this week.

Maximums ranging between 30 and 37 degrees are expected for Tuesday. Cloud cover will increase from the afternoon, and there is a chance of showers or thunderstorms overnight.

Last night was the hottest night ever in the Netherlands since temperatures measurements started in 1901. The minimum in De Bilt was 23.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record from 9 August 2004 of 20.8 degrees, Weerplaza reports.

Maastricht had a higher minimum temperature in 2012, but official records are always measured at the weather station in De Bilt.

Deelen in Gelderland was the warmest last night, with a minimum of 24.4 degrees. Flevoland, the Wadden area and the western parts of Zeeland all also had minimums of above 23 degrees Celsius.

The Netherlands is officially in the midst of a national heatwave. Temperatures measured 30 degrees at De Bilt at 11:20 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of maximums above 30 degrees, making a national heatwave a fact. Heat records were broken at 15 weather stations across the country, NU.nl reports.

For a national heatwave, De Bilt must have five consecutive days with maximums of 25 degrees or higher. Three of those days must measure temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.

The Netherlands can expect hot weather again from next week. There is even a 2 percent chance that temperatures could climb to 42 degrees Celsius, according to Weerplaza. That is much higher than the hottest temperature ever measured in the Netherlands - 38.6 degrees Celsius, measured in Warnsveld.

After last week's summer high temperatures, the Netherlands can expect cooler and cloudier weather this week, according to Weerplaza.

From Monday maximum temperatures will reach no higher than the low 20s. Maximums of around 19 degrees are expected along the coast on Monday, climbing to around 23 degrees in Limburg.

Cloud cover will increase across the country throughout Monday. There may even be a shower here and there, but no heavy rain. 

From Wednesday temperatures will start to climb again, though there may still be some showers in the east of the country.

The second quarter of 2018 was the warmest second quarter in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901, Weerplaza reports. The average temperature for this period currently stands at 15.2 degrees, but as June still has two expected to be hot days left, that may still increase.

Over day the average maximum temperature in April, May and June was 20.3 degrees Celsius. At night minimums dropped to an average of 9.5 degrees, bringing the average temperature for the second quarter to 15.2 degrees - much warmer than the usual average temperature of 12.5 degrees.

There is a very good chance that this June may be the driest one for the Netherlands in a long time, possibly even since weather measurements started in 1901, according to weather services Weeronline and Weerplaza.

Especially the middle, west and southwest parts of the country are experiencing record drought, despite some rainfall over the past days. The biggest rain shortages are in Twente, the Achterhoek, the northern parts of the Veluwe and parts of Noord-Limburg.

The Netherlands has a somewhat chilly weekend ahead of it, with temperatures ranging between 15 and 18 degrees. But after that, summer will return and there is even a chance of a heat wave, according to Weerplaza.

After a chilly and wet Easter weekend, the Netherlands can look forward to some spring-like weather. Temperatures will start rising from Tuesday, and are expected to reach as high as 20 degrees by the weekend, Weerplaza reports. 

Maximum temperatures around 10 degrees and showers are expected for Monday. On Tuesday temperatures will rise to 17 degrees, but both Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be rainy.

Thick fog is expected to cause problems during morning rush hour in almost all of the Netherlands on Monday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning. According to Weerplaza, visibility is reduced to 50 meters in some places.

Thick fog can reduce visibility on the roads on Wednesday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for a large part of the Netherlands. 

Visibility may be reduced to less than 100 meters in some places. From 8:00 a.m. onwards the fog should start dissipating. Only Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and Zeeland are not affected by the weather warning.

Despite pleasantly warm weather this past weekend, spring has not yet arrived in the Netherlands. A cold weekend is ahead for the country. Meteorological institute KNMI expects minimum temperatures around -3 degrees on Friday night.

From Friday cold air from the Arctic region will blow into the Netherlands, according to Weerplaza. Rainfall starting on Friday night will gradually turn into snow. Maximum temperatures for Saturday will hover around freezing, KNMI expects.

Just two days before the start of meteorological spring, temperatures in the Netherlands dropped to below -10 degrees for the first time this winter. A minimum of -10.1 was measured in Eindhoven overnight, Weeronline and Weerplaza report. 

Temperatures below -10 degrees Celsius are considered severe frost. Leeuwarden and Enschede also came close to the severe frost line, with overnight temperatures of -9.5 and -9.6 respectively, according to Weerplaza.

Many cold records will be broken in the Netherlands next weeks, with minimum temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius expected, according to Weerplaza. "In the end of the meteorological winter, King Winter is just as strong", the weather service writes.

Over the coming days night time temperatures will drop below -5 degrees regionally, but it will remain above zero during the day. From Sunday onwards, that will change. Minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be below zero and with that the chance of ice days increases significantly.
