Some 72,500 lightning flashes were counted in Dutch skies while thunderstorms moved across the country on Wednesday night and during the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Weeronline. The storms also brought with them heavy downpours and strong winds.

The showers started on Wednesday evening above the northern parts of France and then melted together into a large storm complex, according to the weather service. The storms reached the south of the Netherlands late in the evening and then moved across the country in a north to northwesterly direction.

A category F1 tornado hit the Gelderland town of Rheden on Tuesday, meteorologist of the weather institute in Wageningen concluded after going to investigate the a path of destruction of what was initially called a whirlwind, which was between four and five kilometers in length. More and more storm damage reports are coming in from across the country. Insurer Interpolis alone already received 230 damage reports, six times more than usual after a storm, a spokesperson said to AD.

After severe thunderstorms left a trail of damage across the Netherlands on Tuesday night, another area of thunderstorms is approaching the country. The first thunderstorms will hit the southernmost part of the Netherlands at around 11:00 p.m., and move across the country during the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Weeronline.

A code orange weather warning was issued on Tuesday afternoon affecting the south and southwest of the country. The warning is for severe thunderstorms and winds that were expected to gust at over 100 kilometers per hour, according to the national weather agency KNMI.

Hail and heavy rains were predicted throughout much of the country, which could also see lightning and heavy wind gusts.

While Tuesday is starting out dry and even sunny in some places, it will end with a bang. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for storms, which may be accompanied by large amounts of rain, strong winds and hail. 

The code yellow weather warning applies to the entire country. The stormy weather will start in the south at around 7:00 p.m. and leave through the north of the country during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Sunday was both the first national tropical day of the year for the Netherlands, and the hottest June 2nd ever measured in the country. Temperatures at the national weather station in De Bilt climbed to 30 degrees at around 4:00 p.m., breaking the previous record of 29.5 degrees dating from 1947, according to Weerplaza.

Many Dutch decided to make use of the warm weather by going to the beach, leading to many traffic jams. People heading to the beach quickly became stuck in traffic on the A20 towards Hoek van Holland and the N201 towards Zandvoort early on Sunday, NU.nl reports.

While the Netherlands is enjoying warm sunny weather on Friday, the weekend will not be quite as pleasant. Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy and cooler, with some rain showers expected, according to Weeronline.

Friday's afternoon temperatures of up to 25 degrees will start to cool down as afternoon turns into evening, thanks to a northwesterly wind. Overnight, cloud cover will spread across the country from the Wadden area, according to the weather service.

Stormy weather caused a lot of problems in the eastern parts of the Netherlands on Sunday. Streets in multiple towns flooded and a lightning strike brought train traffic between Zwolle and Olst to a halt. Lightning strikes also caused a number of small fires, RTL Nieuws reports.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the eastern half of the Netherlands on Sunday, warning of lightning strikes and large amounts of rainfall. Some places also faced large hailstones.

Bad news for those hoping that the winter weather ended with a cold King's Day. The weather expected for Remembrance Day and Liberation Day does not look much better. It will definitely be cold, and there is even a chance of hail and snow on Saturday, meteorologist William Huizinga of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws.

Dense fog banks are reducing visibility in many places across the Netherlands on Monday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning. Public works department Rijkswaterstaat call on motorists to drive with their headlights on, so they can be seen by other traffic.

KNMI expects that the fog should dissipate during the second half of the morning. Until then, visibility is limited to less than 200 meters in many places. "Dangerous driving conditions due to poor visibility. Adjust your speed and keep safe following distance", the meteorological institute said.

Friday will be mostly cloudy with some rain, according to Weeronline. Maximums will range between 16 and 19 degrees, with a weak to moderate wind from the southwest to west.

The past days' summery weather resulted in a very successful Easter weekend for Keukenhof. Over 200 thousand people visited the flower park over the past weekend. A great deal more than the 80 thousand visitors the park received last Easter, when Easter weekend fell almost a month earlier and temperatures were a lot colder, NU.nl reports.

Monday went into the record books as the warmest Easter Monday since temperature measurements started in the Netherlands in 1901. Maximum temperatures climbed to 24.8 degrees Celsius in De Bilt on Monday, breaking the 24.7 degrees record from 1949, Weerplaza reports.

While Monday was the warmest Easter Monday in Dutch history, it wasn't the warmest April 22nd. That record still stands at 26.6 degrees Celsius in De Bilt, dating from last year.

Monday will again be a sunny day with higher temperatures than usual for this time of year. Maximums will climb to between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius, with a moderate wind blowing from the east, according to Weerplaza.

Tuesday and Wednesday will also be sunny and warm, with maximums between 20 and 25 degrees. Cloud cover will increase from Wednesday afternoon, and with that the chance of a shower or two.

The rest of the week is expected to be cooler, with more clouds and a higher chance of rain, according to the weather service.

The Netherlands can look forward to a sunny and warm Easter weekend, according to Weerplaza. The sun will shine every day this long weekend and temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius are expected.

The weekend will start with a sunny maximum of around 21 degrees on Friday. Saturday will be the warmest day, with maximums rising to between 22 and 24 degrees in large parts of the country. "We don't rule out that even 25 degrees can be reached locally", the weather service said. There will be plenty of sunshine and little wind.

Schiphol Airport is struggling under the weather conditions on Monday. Strong winds are causing flight delays and cancelations, the airport warned on Twitter.

As of 10:15 a.m. Schiphol reported 35  departure cancelations trough 4.45 p.m., and 108 departure delays through 2:00 p.m. A total of 37 arrivals have been canceled until 8:10 p.m. and, 210 have been delayed through 11:35 p.m.

Travelers are advised to check their flight status on the Schiphol site or app, or with their airline before leaving for the airport.
