With sunny and warm weather forecast for the Netherlands today, and catering establishments being allowed to open their doors for the first time since mid-March, the day is expected to be busy throughout the country. But the mayors in the Security Council, comprised of the 25 security regions in the Netherlands, are confident that Netherlands residents will adhere to social distancing rules in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

A wonderfully summery Pentecost weekend lies ahead for the Netherlands, according to Weeronline. "The sun will work overtime and the temperature can rise to summer values," the weather service said. Perfect weather for the terraces reopening on Monday.

The long Pentecost weekend is expected to be sunny and warm, with no showers predicted. And with terraces being allowed to open at noon on Pentecost Monday, crowds are again expected to gather in popular outdoor areas.

Plenty of sunshine is expected for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, according to Weeronline. On all three days, maximums will range from 19 degrees Celsius on the Wadden, 22 degrees in Amsterdam, and up to 25 degrees in the southern parts of the country.

With about one week left to go in meteorological spring, the Netherlands has set a new high mark for the sunniest spring since record-keeping began. This year the country has been blanketed with 713.4 hours of sunshine, breaking the record set in 2011 by about six minutes, said Weer.nl.

By this date, the country would normally have seen 415 hours of sunshine for the season. On average, the Netherlands gets about 517 hours of sunshine for the March 1 - May 31 spring period.

Ascension Day today may be the first official summer's day of the year in the Netherlands. The sunny and dry day will see maximums between 23 and 28 degrees, according to Weerplaza. If thermometers climb to 25 degrees in De Bilt, the official summer's day is a fact.

With temperatures climbing to the high twenties this week, rescue brigades in the Netherlands are warning people to be careful of going to cool down in the open water. The water temps are still cold, and due to the coronavirus crisis, there aren't lifeguards everywhere. 

"The water is still quite cold at this time of year; about 12 degrees. Swimming and playing in cold water has a massive effect on the body, so these activities can lead to dangerous situations. For example, hypothermia and cramps," the rescue brigades warn.

The Netherlands can look forward to sunny spring weather this week, with maximums climbing every day to a peak on Ascension day on Thursday. On that day thermometers will top 25 degrees in many places, with the southeast of the country even hitting 29 degrees Celsius, Weeroline expects. The  weekend will be somewhat cooler, with a chance of showers.

Strong gusts of wind damaged mainly trees in the coastal provinces of the Netherlands on Sunday. As the trees are carrying their spring leaves, they are extra vulnerable to winds. A code yellow warning is still in effect for Zeeland and Zuid-Holland. According to meteorological institute KNMI, these provinces will face strong winds until around 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

The Netherlands is in for a confusing weekend, weather wise. Saturday is expected to be nice and warm, with maximums between 19 and 25 degrees. But Mother's Day on Sunday will be rainy and cold, with thermometers only climbing to between 9 and 14 degrees, according to Weeronline. "Those 10 degrees makes the difference between a t-shirt and a winter jacket," the weather service said.

This weekend will be mostly sunny and warm in the Netherlands, with a chance of a few showers in the south and center of the country on Saturday. "Enjoying the nice weather is still best in the garden or on your balcony," Weeronline said. 

Friday is basked in sunshine, with maximums ranging from around 11 degrees in the north to 21 degrees in the south. As the day progresses, some clouds will start forming in the south.

After the supermoon made a spectacular display in Dutch skies on Tuesday night, Wednesday is also set to be a beautiful day in the Netherlands. There will be plenty of sunshine, with maximums up to 25 degrees. Some places in the south of the country may even see thermometers climb to 26 degrees, according to Weeronline.

A supermoon will be visible in the Netherlands on Tuesday night, if the weather plays along. A supermoon is when the moon is close to the earth during full moon, which makes it look bigger than usual.

Popular weather website Buienradar predicts partly cloudy skies from 10:00 p.m. through dawn. But Dutch meteorological institute KNMI is more upbeat. Their scientists expect mostly clear skies, with only some patches of cloud, which are more likely to be present in the north and the east of the country.

The supermoon will be at its best at 4:35 a.m. on Wednesday.

But that does not mean we can suddenly ignore the social distancing measures implemented to fight the spread of coronavirus Covid-19, the weather service warned. The minimum temperature in Woensdrecht dropped to -6.1 degrees during the night from Monday to Tuesday, making it colder than any night in the entire winter, according to Weeronline. The coldest night of the winter was January 21, when the minimum dropped to -5.4 degrees.

A bit of good news among the coronavirus gloom - the weather services in the Netherlands expect a very sunny week with spring-like temperatures. Wednesday may even see maximums climb to 19 degrees in the southeast of the country, according to Weerplaza.

The spring-like period starts on Tuesday, with plenty of sunshine, especially in the south. Weerplaza expects no rain, a moderate southwesterly wind, and maximums ranging between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Wednesday will be even milder, with maximums between 12 and 17 degrees, or maybe even up to 19 in the southeast.

This was the seventh consecutive winter in which temperatures in the Netherlands did not drop to -10 degrees Celsius or lower at the weather station in De Bilt, according to Weeronline. This winter was also the second warmest winter since temperature measurements started in 1901, and included the wettest February on record.

Rain combined with a cold night mean that the roads in the Netherlands may be icy on Friday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country, except the Wadden Islands, advising road users to be careful and adjust their driving behavior accordingly.

February 2020 was the wettest February in Dutch history. An average of 142 millimeters of rain fell across the country, while 55 millimeters is normal for the Netherlands in February, according to Weeronline. The month was also exceptionally mild, going into the books as the second warmest February since temperature measurements started in 1901.

The storm winds that rocked the Netherlands on Saturday also resulted in the most ever wind power generated in the country - an average of 4 gigawatts of wind power was generated, compared to the usual 1.2 gigawatts. Over 30 percent of all electricity generated in the country on Saturday, was generated by wind turbines - a record, RTL Nieuws reports based on figures from energieopwek.nl.

Wednesday started out with showers all across the Netherlands, ranging from possible hail along the coast to snow in the south and east of the country. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland and Overijssel, warning motorists against icy roads.

"Chance of slipperiness. All traffic may be hindered. Adjust your driving behavior. Follow weather reports and warnings," KNMI warned.

The provinces of Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland and Zeeland can expect strong winds with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour on Monday afternoon, according to a code yellow weather warning issued by meteorological institute KNMI. The rest of the country can also expect a blustery day, with showers forecast for the afternoon.

A windy Thursday morning is set to turn into a very blustery afternoon and evening, with meteorological institute KNMI issuing a Code Yellow warning covering the entire country. The strong winds are expected to continue off-and-on throughout the weekend - the third consecutive stormy weekend for the Netherlands as storms Ellen and Francis are looming.
